In a future world devoid of all men, a civilization of women has found an inventive way to perpetuate the species. Using a secret time travel device and intricate DNA research, the women travel to the past to abduct men with the proper genetic material at their moment of ‘critical termination’ – in other words, at the moment of their death. Held captive in the future and harvested for their ‘genetic material’ the men are eventually returned to the moment of their death when harvesting is complete. Ariana Seven has never fit in, finding she prefers to live alone rather than date any of the women she has met. When she is assigned to be Jackson Taylor’s ‘Collector’, she finds her sexuality and loses her heart. Last Man on Earth is an interesting look at a futuristic society run by women, struggling to perpetuate the species – but only in the way they see fit. The romance between Collector Ariana Seven and kidnapped lawyer Jackson Taylor is the primary theme of the story, but Evangeline Anderson manages to sneak in some subtle social commentary when we aren’t looking. I am always impressed with authors who can build complex back stories for their characters in novella length books, and Anderson succeeds in this with Last Man on Earth. Not only do we understand much about the lead characters’ lives, but we have a clear view of the post-apocalyptic future world where there are no men. With this futuristic world, Anderson has an opportunity for many sequels, should she be so inspired. While the story of Ariana and Jackson is complete, their world is so vivid and complex, it seems ripe with more tales. I will definitely be buying them, should they ever happen!
