Centuries ago,
Griet of Ardglass was banished to the mortal world for one hundred years, along
with her classmates. Since then, it has proven difficult for her to stay out of
trouble, a fact which has extended her banishment by hundreds of years.
So she lives still amongst the humans, now known as Jasmine “Jazz” Tremaine,
curse-lifter extraordinaire and driver of paranormal creatures. Both jobs land
her in some pretty sticky situations at times. But neither compares to the mess
she finds herself in when on-again, off-again lover Nikolai Gregorivich lands
right smack in the middle of her life once again.
She should be over him, she really should. Vampires and Witches don’t mix –
ever. That little truth somehow escapes the libido and hearts of both Nick and
Jazz, who can’t seem to stay away from each other for too very long, no matter
that their relationship usually ends badly.
Jazz wants to say no, she really does. But she’s apparently the only one who
can help Nick investigate the case of the missing vampires. And when the trail
leads to the doorstep of her most feared enemy, she really can’t refuse.
I’m going to be straight up – I rarely pick up a book with a cartoon cover. I
think I just find it hard to take them seriously. The blurb for Linda Wisdom’s
50 WAYS TO HEX YOUR LOVER was intriguing to me, however, and so I
gave it a chance. Only pages into the story, it became crystal clear that this
is not a story that should be taken seriously at all – it is far too
hilarious for that!
I soon forgot all about what was on the cover and found myself completely
immersed in Jazz and Nick’s strange and wonderful world where shoes are
sometimes living creatures with their own magic and a witch’s cold can rival
Mother Nature’s worst tantrum.
With her power, there isn’t much that Jazz can’t do, but there is that pesky
Witches’ High Council to keep her in check. Still, that doesn’t keep the
irrepressible witch from pulling a few magical stunts, but only when the victim
of her ire really, really deserves it. The ruling council sees all,
however, and those stunts aren’t without their price. But, as Jazz believes,
sometimes the punishment deserves the crime.
Don’t get me wrong, Jazz is as good-hearted as they come. She’s also a big
proponent of teaching wrongdoers lessons they won’t soon forget. Too bad the
Witches’ High Council doesn’t always agree…
Nick, however, sees no fault with Jazz. OK, he might prefer she stay out of
dangerous situations, but that’s because he loves her so much. He’ll do
anything to keep her safe, even if it leaves him on the outs with her when the
dust settles. No sacrifice is too great for our hero when it comes to Jazz
Tremaine.
50 WAYS TO HEX YOUR LOVER is undeniably funny, but it is not
without some darkness. This story comes complete with a dastardly villain who
will chill you right to your bones and an action-packed ending that will have
you sitting on the edge of your seat until you reach the happy ending.
Linda Wisdom can add this reviewer to her growing list of fans, and I am very
much looking forward to the sequels in her HEX series!
