Paul
Dear is a well-loved boy, with two parents who cherish him. Then something
terrible happens, and Paul’s family is torn apart, leaving his mother a
shell of herself.
Being a good and caring son, Paul is determined to make things better for
his mother. He embarks on a quest to enlist the aid of The Boy of Legend,
who he has known in his dreams and more recently, met in his own mirrors.
He is certain The Boy can help him, but first he must find his way to
Anyplace.
Once there, Paul Dear finds that things are horribly amiss, and The Boy is
just not himself. Before Paul can help his mother, he must first rescue The
Boy and all of Anyplace!
How I wish I had read Peter David’s TIGERHEART when I was just
a girl. While I was absolutely delighted with this wonderful children’s
story now, I can only imagine how spellbound I would have been reading it
during my more tender years.
Mr. David has spun an incredible tale that is sure to capture the
imaginations of today’s youth, giving it a permanent place on their
bookshelves as they beg their parents to read it to them over and over
again. Certainly, TIGERHEART is a classic in the making.
At first glance, one might assume that this is a retelling of J.M. Barrie’s
PETER PAN, as the characters and setting are very obviously
the same, simply with new names (Anyplace instead of Neverland, Gwennie
instead of Wendy, etc.) But that would be an oversimplification of this
story. What Peter David has delivered with TIGERHEART is a
new adventure starring Barrie’s beloved characters as told through the eyes
of Paul Dear. With every page, David’s love for the legend of PETER
PAN is more than apparent, and he obviously treats his story with
due consideration of that long-lived classic. Indeed, I can think of no
better compliment to pay the author than to say that he has instilled a
compelling desire in me to read J.M. Barrie’s original story, which I have
not yet read, and witness for myself the magic that so inspired Mr. David.
TIGERHEART will captivate readers of all ages, but the vocabulary
used is very intelligent. While children and even some adults might enjoy
having a dictionary handy while they read this book, Mr. David uses each word in
such context that it is easy to discern the general meaning without a one. Of
course, isn’t half the reason we read to improve the mind and expand the
imagination as much as we read for simple entertainment? It always has been
that way for me, which made me more than appreciative of the descriptive words
the author used to paint a rich and picturesque landscape.
While TIGERHEART is undeniably a whimsical tale infused with all
of the magic and fantasy you would expect from a story inspired by PETER
PAN, Peter David subtly includes quite a number of life lessons that
will serve both children and adults well. Don’t miss the interview with the
author at the back of the book. After completing the story, reading the
author’s words concerning the development of this story was a wonderful finish.
