Shana Kerr grew up an orphan, raised by a friend of her mother, but ignorant of her birthright and her destiny. Believing herself to be the daughter of a healer, she never imagined that she was actually the daughter of a King and a Chosen One, nor could she have expected that the fate of the world would rest on her shoulders. When she finds Ryder L’Syr near dead in the woods near her home, Shana brings her mentor to him, who heals him. Her mentor, a member of the Chosen, recognizes Shana’s destiny depends on Ryder’s protection, and quickly elicits an oath from him to aid Shana on her quest, in order to fulfill his Warrior’s Debt to them for saving his life. Shana is aghast when she learns Ryder will accompany her on her quest, but secretly determines to elude him at the first opportunity. But leaving Ryder will not be as easy as she believes – especially after she falls in love with him! A Warrior’s Debt by Trudy Thompson is a wonderful fantasy romance! The author manages to incorporate many of my favorites in this story – shape shifters, wizards, and a virile warrior! There is a wealth of history in the novel, and one could easily see a prequel being spawned by the nuggets spread in the back story. In fact, Thompson has easily laid the groundwork for several prequels, should she choose to write them. That said, while the back stories are intriguing, the reader is never left unfulfilled in this tale, only intrigued and hungry for more. Honorable, strong, and kind, Ryder is still a dangerously attractive alpha male who knows he will have his way. Although he is immediately drawn to Shana, she is frightened by him, and treats him with rudeness and distrust in the beginning. In spite of this, his noble nature and attraction to Shana combine to ensure he responds with kindness, yet firmness, never letting her ride roughshod over him. Shana’s confusion and fright concerning Ryder and the feelings he stirs in her pave the way for a touching relationship when she realizes her rudeness and how unreasonable she has been. Once she moves past this barrier, we are treated to a sweet affair that rapidly progresses to a true and passionate love. Thompson’s writing is captivating, and she easily absorbs the reader in her world. This is a thoroughly enjoyable story for fans of fantasy romance!
