Growing up with an alcoholic father, Jack has seen many things – worst of all
the slow descent of his mother towards death because of his fathers abuse. When
his father brings home a young, new wife, Mary, Jack can not take the cruelty he
witnesses and when he attempts to speak up, he is thrown out of the house and
left to his own devices. Before he leaves he promises Mary that he will return
for her. It is a promise that he doesn’t take lightly and every day that he is
on his own is a day closer to returning to the woman that has captured his
heart, no matter that she is his stepmother. Jack becomes employed as a cook and for two years he scrimps and saves until he is finally able to return to Mary like he promised. Finding her with a bruise on her face and working her fingers to the bone in a saloon, Jack immediately makes plans to take her away. Hopefully Mary will feel the same way. The storyline of A Promise Kept is an enticing one. Younger man, older woman. Knight in shining armor comes back to rescue the abused damsel in distress. It is not a relatively original plot but it usually works for me. A Promise Kept had the promise to be truly remarkable but much to my dismay, it fell short of its mark. There seemed to be an almost robotic litany to A Promise Kept. I didn’t get a feel for the characters, maybe because the book was so short. But I don’t think that is the case. With the book being in first person, I felt like the author was giving a speech instead of telling a romantic story. I need pop and sizzle – I wanted heat and passion. Neither is in the pages of A Promise Kept. Jack and Mary’s relationship went from stepmother and stepson to intimate lovers in a matter of minutes and as a reader, I need more than that. I need romance. I won’t give up on Alex de Kok as an author but I will be more conscientious as a reader when exploring this author’s next release.
