Paisley McCoy had a really bad day. She’d overslept and gotten to work late, only to find her office crawling with cops. Someone had broken in for no apparent reason – nothing seemed to be stolen. Then, when she finally got home, she was in danger again. Paisley calls the police, which brings Daddy into the picture. Daddy is the Police Captain and he’s determined to keep his daughter safe. He pulls Gray Beckham, Detective Inspector Beckham, off his current investigation to guard Paisley. Neither of them is happy about this arrangement. And their tempers fly. So do other body parts. But I’ll leave you to figure out which ones. When I started this book, I thought it would be just another “guess who’s stalking the heroine” tale. I was pleasantly surprised to find a really good mystery wrapped around a hot romance. Gray and Paisley are well matched individuals. Their relationship heats up fast, but it’s believable. The danger in the situation puts them on a fast track. Paisley is one tough cookie, who is determined to escape Daddy’s watchdog. She is not going to allow fear of the stalker to take over her life and she plans to keep on track with her job as a reporter on the social scene. Uber-Alpha Gray is having no part of that plan and demands immediate obedience. But even his best laid plans go astray when he finds that he cares about Paisley too much to make her a prisoner. Each has a spine of steel when necessary, while still harboring a reserve of tenderness for each other. Despite Gray’s best efforts, the stalker just keeps appearing and never seems to lose their scent, even after several location changes. If you read mysteries, you have a pretty good chance of figuring out who the stalker is. But, count on the fact of some classic mis-direction. And the final confrontation with the stalker is sure to keep you jumping. This is not your ordinary rescues scene. The one problem I had with this story stems from a scene where Gray is pulled back into his investigation and makes a choice that I thought inconsistent with his personality and the task of keeping Paisley safe. In my opinion, the scene was unnecessary and distracting. I kept wondering why? Over all, PROTECTIVE CUSTODY is a fun and sexy read. Just one question. Why are there no cops like that where I live? I could use some protecting! |
