Carinian Derrickson is a brilliant scientist and one kick-ass chick, whose
research into gene therapy is designed to extend life by emulating vampires.
You know – the creatures of myths and novels. She is also the mate of Jon
Bixler – generally known as Bix – who is a real vampire and head Seeker for the
Vampire Council of Ethics (V.C.O.E.). Seekers hunt rogue vampires, whose
activities endanger the existence of the rest of the vampires. They meet when
Bix is sent to monitor the activities of a rogue vampire working in and around
Carinian’s labs. When they meet, Bix can’t control his fangs and he can barely
control his lust. His control and abilities are put to the test, when the rogue
vampire targets Carinian. The race to save her life and beat the bad guys makes
this vampire romance more of an adventure story than a romance. Along the way,
we meet other Seekers and get a glimpse into the world of vampires and the
V.C.O.E. The concept of a parallel society living among us is not a new one. It’s been done well and it’s been done poorly. In this first book of the VCOE series, TJ Michaels creates a complex but believable society of Vampires, living in and around humans. Now granted, they have the most advanced gadgets and dress like Neo in the Matrix, but their actions and codes are well developed and make sense. The star of this book is not the gadgets, the Seekers in leather coats, or even the Council itself– Carinian is. She is feisty, never at a loss for words, and capable of great scientific accomplishments, while telling everyone around her what to do and where to get off. She is truly a memorable woman. I was a little worried that Bix might not be strong enough for her – silly me, of course he was. Watching their struggle to strike a balance in the relationship made me laugh. This is definitely a must read book, if you like Vampire Romance.
