PIRATE’S BOOTY incorporates two stories. One is a historical romance, between Matthew the pirate and his childhood love, Abby. Their story is being written by romance author Elizabeth McGill. She’s writing the book during a short and very cold visit to Block Island, where she meets Lucius Stone, who appears to be the island handyman. He soon becomes the inspiration for her pirate characters and her private fantasies. So far, so good. In fact, I really liked the entire set up. Elizabeth had just the right amount of absent minded romance writer, who needed rescuing by Lucius. And he clearly has the right tools. But … I was disappointed by the follow through. As much as I liked the characters, I think the story was too short to let the author fully develop their relationship, even though she had such a solid start. For example, at one point (no spoiler here) they have a silly fight. Then, the “make up” scene goes by so quickly that I was lost. They ended up in bed right after that, and I didn’t see how it made sense for who they were. I would love to see this story re-told with more time spent developing the connection between Elizabeth and Lucius. And I’d love to see how the story between Matthew and Abby ends too.
